Is Valentine's Day Overrated??

Honey chile let me tell you… yes… honey chile…lol!!  Every year on February 14th, millions and millions of people celebrate the chocolate overloaded Valentine’s Day.  (Okay, I love chocolate)!  This holiday is said to be the most romantic and wonderful time to declare love and show how much others are appreciated.  Everyone dreams of spending this day in a special memorable way with showers of balloons, candy, teddy bears, flowers, jewelry, the best restaurants and lets not forget the kisses, dancing, and singing.  Oh don’t you just feel the love running through your veins?!!!

Now, I’m not some bitter black woman who hates Valentine’s Day by any means.  I just prefer to be rational in different situations.

In my opinion, the power of mass media has taken a huge part in influencing human minds and shaping public opinions of what this holiday should be.  This day has become so significant and symbolic that anyone who doesn’t have someone to share it with now feels lonely, heartbroken, not loved or appreciated.  Okay, this doesn’t apply to all, but studies have shown the negative effects it has on the moods of people… especially single people.

Yes, I am single and absolutely feel that Valentine’s Day has become such a commercialized holiday.

Some people receive gifts and love 364 days out of the year, but on this ONE day they don’t receive a card, gift of any kind, etc… They are in an enormous uproar!  Yeah some of won’t like what I’m saying but oh well!!!  Now, don’t get me wrong, I love seeing everyone happy with Cheshire Cat smiles on their faces, joy in their eyes… all around total bliss.  I just don’t agree with it being associated with ONE day of the year.

Yes, I get candy, jewelry, chocolate covered strawberries, cards, flowers, teddy bears and so much more.  However, I wouldn’t feel unappreciated if I didn’t get anything on February 14th.  Why is that you ask??... Because I am blessed and receive love and gifts throughout the year.

I was once that young girl who was heartbroken when I was alone without gifts on Valentine’s Day… but I grew up and began appreciating the other 364 days of the year.

I just want you all to realize that February 14th has become so commercialized by mass media that sales sky rocket through the roof.  Therefore, people feel obliged to buy gifts and send hundreds of cards through the mail.  That is foolery!!

If you don’t have the funds to buy gifts for anyone, don’t feel guilty.  If you are a single woman or man, don’t feel so lonely and unappreciated.  If a random person doesn’t ask you to be their Valentine, don’t feel like you aren’t loved.  February 15th is coming the next day and I promise you those feelings will fade into the background...lol!! Trust me!!!  I know!

Again, this is only my opinion.  Tell me…Do you agree or disagree that Valentine’s Day is overrated?
